Idea #22955: Add a personal vpn setup utility

Written by mdhunn the 14 Dec 09 at 02:19. Related project: Network Manager. Status: New
Rationale
When I was going on vacation, I setup a OpenVPN server on my desktop computer and it was a pain.

None of the utilities I found in the Synaptic or the Software center really was able to foot the bill. The GADMIN utility was seriously dated and un-able to play nice with Network Manager for example.

Solution #1: Add a good easy to use vpn setup utility
Written by mdhunn the 14 Dec 09 at 02:19.
What I would have really loved was a utility that could find my laptop on my home network, ssh into it, display a confirmation dialog on said laptop, and finally install the keys and appropriate client on it. Naturally it should provide for a plan B, such as kicking out a deb, or a tar ball with the keys in it.

When I mean pain, I mean wading through OpenVPN's how-to and, lots of experimenting to get it right. It was my first time setting up a vpn and a lot of people would have been intimidated or given up.

for small personal VPNs i recommend "tinc" - check it out, its much simpler to setup than openVPN.

I want something with a network manager client, so I can connect and disconnect from it as needed. I looked for a way of tying tink into network manager and couldn't find anything. But thanks for the suggestion.
