Idea #22213: Nautilus closes after USB is taken out

Written by Vignesh S the 2 Nov 09 at 09:36. Related project: Nautilus. Status: New
Rationale
Whenever a USB flash drive is ejected, safely removed or otherwise, instead of the USB file manager currently showing the contents on the USB closing down automatically, it goes to /media. I find this pointless, since once the USB is taken out, there are no files to show, and leading it to a different place is just confusing.

Solution #1: Automatically close down Nautilus once the USB is taken out
Written by Vignesh S the 2 Nov 09 at 09:36.
Once a USB is taken out, the file manager window showing the contents of the USB should be closed automatically too. Or, if there is a tab of Nautilus showing the USB's contents, that tab should automatically close once the USB is removed, whether it is safely removed, unmonuted or otherwise

Solution #2: Show "Computer" Virtual folder instead of /media

This way, the user's window won't be closed like it crashed.

Solution #3: Show "home" folder instead of /media
Written by Ssdg the 3 Nov 09 at 00:32.
This way, the user's window won't be closed like it crashed.

And the user will have access to a more likely "next destination" of the user.

Solution #4: Make it configurable
Written by Voland the 9 Nov 09 at 10:22.
Make an option in System-Administration dedicated to removeable devices with different variants of Nautilus' behaviour

Solution #5: Wherever you're sent, there should be a message to avoid confusion
Written by gausie the 25 Nov 09 at 16:06.
To whichever folder it is decided Nautilus should point, there should be a message explaining the move, like in this solution to a previous Idea (http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/8576/filesystemmockupmedia.png).

Linux must be the only OS that leaves a window open when the location dissapears. WHY?

Vignesh S wrote on the 3 Nov 09 at 06:23
Yeah, I don't get that. Even when I remove my USB safely, the window that showed the contents of the USB goes to /media. I have no idea what type of logic that is :-(

At least you don't have to close that window to remove flash disk ;)

anything instead of /media

Its best to leave it to the user. Some people want Computer to shown and others Home directory me personaly want nautilus to close so why not a extra option in Nautilus how to behave. Give what the user want.

Hmm... good point shinger. I'll add that :-)

A melhor opção e menos confusa é realmente fechar a Janela do Nautilus.

If nautilus closes because i removed my usb drive, i will not be happy.

@Darwin Survivor: MS Windows does the same thing. When you unplug a USB drive, the explorer window jumps to the "My Computer" virtual folder. You can still go back to the old location with the back button.

Personally, I find that behaviour annoying too...

What will happen when the USB window is actually a Nautilus tab, should the entire window close? No!

Vignesh S wrote on the 8 Nov 09 at 21:03
@manuelciosici:
I'm not saying that if the USB is a tab, the whole window should close down. I'm saying that just the tab with the contents of the USB should close once the USB is unmounted/safely removed or ejected/taken out.

@robertjlee
I just realised that it is Windows XP that closes the window of the USB once the USB is taken out, and it is Vista (and probably Windows 7 too) that goes to "My Computer". Dunno why MS changed it though...
