Idea #22144: Not everyone uses Evolution, integrate other email clients with Ubuntu One

Written by aliam13_2 the 30 Oct 09 at 11:51. Category: Office. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Evolution is now integrated with Ubuntu One, where the contacts are synced and stored on Ubuntu One. Many people use other email clients such as the very popular Thunderbird and as such don't have the contacts synced like in evolution.

Solution #1: Integrate Thunderbird with Ubuntu One
Written by aliam13_2 the 30 Oct 09 at 11:52.
Implement (possibly using a plugin) the same integration Evolution has with Ubuntu One for Thunderbird.

Solution #2: Make ubuntu one more pluggable.
Written by Darwin Survivor the 30 Oct 09 at 23:50.
Ubuntu one should be made to be more pluggable. That way people could simply write a new plugin for it and thunderbird. Then as long as all the machines they are using have both plugins, it would work.

Solution #3: Use SeaMonkey
Written by Softwayer the 11 Nov 09 at 18:42.
What about using SeaMonkey and integrating IT with Ubuntu One? This is the child of Mozilla Internet Suite. It would be good to replace Firefox and Thunderbird with SeaMonkey: it works faster and it's the one application, so if you click a link in a letter, no external applications will be launched. Ubuntu won't do any thing about this because simple Thunderbird isn't the default. my advice to you is to wait for Mozilla's raindrop.

Either way it's an idea. Bumped.

This would be a good idea, but if you look at thunderbird's and evolutions contact's, you'll notice that there is a few differences.... and it will be hardcore to adapt thunderbird so it fits evolutions specs.

Until Evolution makes it easy to use Gmail I'll be sticking to Thunderbird.

And what about KDE users?

rdesfo wrote on the 22 Nov 09 at 16:58
The best solution wouldn't be to develop for each application (thunderbird, raindrop, etc.) but to make it easy for other developers to plug into the Ubuntu One platform.

Rdesfo said everything. There are a plenty of email readers besides Thunderbird and Evolution that are widely. Ubuntu One should be able to easily integrate with them, even if by plugins.
