Idea #21848: Free "instant on" version of Ubuntu / Ubuntu derivative Distro

Written by cshong the 15 Oct 09 at 05:17. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Some new laptops / netbooks in the market came with both pre-installed Microsoft Windows and pre-installed "instant on" fast booting Linux which include the features of web browsing and others. Users can access the internet in just seconds after switch on their computer.

You may have a look at the following commercial "Instant-On" operating system:

1. Splashtop ( http://www.splashtop.com/ ), an instant-on operating system which only distributed with new laptops / Netbooks.

2. Presto ( http://www.prestomypc.com/ ) which is not free.

My computer does not came with this type of Operating System. And, I can't found any free "Instant-On" Linux distro on the internet.

Solution #1: Create a "Instant-on" version of Ubuntu / Ubuntu derivative distro
Written by cshong the 15 Oct 09 at 05:17.
Create a "Instant-on" version of Ubuntu derivate (with features of Splashtop) which can be downloaded and installed via Wubi, bootable live CD / DVD.

Computer manufacturer and motherboard manufacturer also can pre-install it on their new product.

Optional: Some new computer has an additional button. When pressed, it will switch on the computer and directly boot into "Instant-On" OS instead of Windows. It will be great if "Instant-on" version of Ubuntu derivate support this.

If possible, include an audio/Video playing software that support DVD, while other codecs can be downloaded and installed.

Come on.. Ubuntu already boots in 40 seconds..

Plus, if you think about it, people might think that is the only version of Ubuntu.

To andreibranescu,

I am not talking about fast boot. I am talking about instant-on like what Splashtop did.

Creating this type of ubuntu derivative give more options to OEM customer who want to implement instant-on operating system into their product.

Splashtop is commercial. OEM customers may have to pay fees for preinstall it in their product. A priority and not free product vs an open source and free product which deliver the same or better features, I think those OEM customer know which to choose.
