Idea #2178: Better Gtk Open File Dialog

Written by hubertf the 1 Mar 08 at 13:50. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
The gtk open file dialog is a pain to use...

-> No thumbnails for images
-> No many way to sort the files
-> No way to cut and paste files...
-> and it's very slow when opening a directory with many files

I speak about the GTK file open dialog (which is in all GTK+ applications) and not about the old FF2 Open Dialog

the first item implemented in the -future- 2.22 version

Yeah good point! Opening /usr/bin needs lot of time here.

Additionally to cut/paste: Rename, Delete

Also, there's no visual indication, how to view hidden (dot9 files. You have to know, that you must enter their path (or part of) directly.

My file dialog now shows the hidden directories in my home dir by default and I have no idea how to turn this off.

-> No way to refresh. Doesn't refresh automatically (i.e. using inotify).

+1

The gnome file-save dialog is pretty awful; rather than typing it all out again, here's my commentary:

Here's the larger context of my rant:

+1 Hate when I create a folder in the wrong place and have to open nautilus to delete it.

@strogon Right click > Show hidden files

Agree wholeheartedly. I finally "made the switch" from Windows and was extremely disappointed to find that such an oft-used feature as the standard Open and Save dialogs are so horribly crippled in Gnome. I'm not a big fan of KDE so I'd really like this to be improved in the "default" desktop.

Even an "open this folder in Nautilus" option would be an improvement!

There should be a file name filter.

e.g. *.htm would list only .htm files.

And, to be more specific about one of the suggestions above, the dialog box should have the option to sort on file name extensions.

Also, history would be nice so that particular, often used, file names can be entered without extensive navigation.

One wonders why the whole Nautilus UI is not used for open/save.

I've attached the Ubuntuforums.org thread #811795.

For me and other people the speed problems are solved disabling the tracker daemon.

We can use Beagle instead.

Some icon packages also slow down browsing in a GTK dialog.

In my case I found problems with "elementary 1.9" icon set.

Right click options should be consistent with the actions allowed from Thunar/Nautilus.

Open File should have an option to use "icon view" like the icon view in Nautilus. This would provide larger thumbnails so it would be much easier to select pictures.

Once you get Ubuntu support for this issue and you get the attention of a developer (or if someone from this list can help to develop),
see
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/browse.cgi?product=gtk%2B
for features requests relevant to the Open/Save dialogs.
In gtk+ lingo, you want to add a feature to the 'file chooser'.

This bug already exists in the GTK+ Bugzilla system, and has been open since 2005, with several other bugs marked as duplicates. As far as I can see, no word from a GTK+ dev as yet. Sigh.
