Idea #2174: @ubuntu.com email addresses?

bug This idea was marked as being not considered for implementation the 19 July 08.
Written by tdrusk the 1 Mar 08 at 13:46. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: Won't implement
Rationale
Do you think it would be cool if Ubuntu allowed us an email with @ubuntu.com? It would be a great form of advertisement, as a @mac.com.

I am not sure about this, so I think it's a great idea to brainstorm.

Developer comments
@ubuntu.com mail addresses are only for Ubuntu members.

That means only people who have be recognized to have done significant participation in the Ubuntu project can get one, it's also a guarantee that receiving an e-mail from a @ubuntu.com is coming from someone with a good understanding of the Ubuntu project.

We don't plan to change that policy in any near future.

With IMAP support ... and blackjack, and hookers ;)

And to pick up on the mac idea: how about email and some website space for non-commerical use that we pay for (but cheaper than mac) - knowing that our money will go to funding Ubuntu.

I for one would be very interested in dropping my current webhost in favour of an Ubuntu-hosted site - although I'd really like to keep my current address.

I don't think it's going to happen, though.

Hello,

Could you please reserve my email address?

Bill_Gates@ubuntu.com

Cheers,
Bill

That would be great! But how the heck would you get the name you want? Unless it was required that you put in your full name with 2 random numbers on the end?

Good idea for advertising.

+1

I think it would be better just as a jabber server

No deviation from the initial mission please. Don't forget that Mac is a commercial venture while Ubuntu is currently a community-effort powered by Canonical - they have been nice hosts so far but let's not make an abuse of it.

As Vojtech Trefny said, @ubuntu.com e-mail addresses are given to Ubuntu Members.

So, receiving mail from a @ubuntu.com mail address means that the sender is directly involved in Ubuntu and I would like that to remain the case.

Ubuntu is about creating a Linux distribution, not offering web services like Google/Microsoft/Apple do. Let's focus on our main goal and don't waste time doing things that already exist and work pretty well (gmail/gtalk for email/jabber).
