Idea #21594: gnome-volume-control is a mess

Written by cousteau the 28 Sep 09 at 20:20. Related project: Gnome. Status: New
Rationale
The current volume control window is very confusing and doesn't offer easy to use functionality. For example, I have 5 different devices (ALSA mixer, OSS mixer, and 3 PulseAudio mixers), and I don't have (or can't find) the option to select a split capture (e.g. left = line in, right = mic).

Solution #1: Use QAMix, or a QAMix-like interface
Written by cousteau the 28 Sep 09 at 20:20.
QAMix is an ALSA mixer with a simple interface. On a normal sound card, it has 3 tabs: playback, external source playback, and capture. On the capture tab you can select separately the left and right source (this is good for audio cards that do not allow input mixing if, for example, I want to capture a guitar and a microphone at the same time).

Solution #2: Merge ALSA/OSS/PulseAudio controls
Written by cousteau the 28 Sep 09 at 20:30.
One of the problems of gnome-volume-control is that it uses different controls for each sound API. I don't know how these APIs work and if this is possible, but it would be easier to have a single control for all parameters of the same kind. For example, a "capture" control that sets the capture volume for Alsa, OSS and PulseAudio, so you can modify the capture volume of a program independently of which API it uses. Then, use a simple interface as proposed in #1.

An "Advanced Settings" button could be added so the controls of different APIs could be controlled separately.
