Idea #21196: Lack of a mountpoint option in the "Connect to Server" dialogue

Written by brinerustle the 26 Aug 09 at 09:22. Related project: Nautilus. Status: New
Rationale
When using the "Connect to Server" dialogue within nautilus, there is no option to choose a mountpoint.

When connecting, for example, to a network drive, it mounts inside the user's home directory in ".gvfs", which is difficult to find, and also complicates backups of the home directory.

Solution #1: Add a mountpoint option in the "Connect to Server" dialogue

Include an option in the dialogue to search for (and if necessary create) a directory and then mount the drive there.

Solution #2: Use a better default location
Written by Hawke the 31 Aug 09 at 22:14.
Use a mount point that isn't inside a hidden directory, so that the user can find it more easily.

I don't use this method of mounting shares from my network because of this. I'm definitely for allowing users to pick a mount point. But apart from that; it bites that its default mount path is a HIDDEN directory in home. That results in a lack of transparency (I remember once mounting a network share this way, after which I tried to open a file from said share in a non-Gnome application. I simply had no idea where it was mounted and I didn't use it since.

So please, just create one "media"-like directory for mounts that is used if I don't pick an alternative location.
