Idea #21182: Auto rearrange icon position after adding or removing new icons

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #14352: Auto Re-arrange Desktop Icons.
Written by socola the 25 Aug 09 at 09:21. Related project: Gnome. Status: New
Rationale
When I add or remove icons from panel, the space left is still there. I have to "move" it to save the empty space. I like it automatically rearranges icon position to make a tidy panel

The gnome panels always struck me as rather inflexible, so I'm not sure if this could be done in a reasonable fashion. I imagine a lot of launchers snapping to either side of a large empty space rather than staying where you put it unless you lock it, and that's hardly intuitive.

Good idea, so +1, but the panels are nearing the end of their life in the Gnome ecosystem.

They are not dead yet, and I hope is stays that way.

I think there should be an option below the "lock to panel" entry to let icons gravitate to the left/center/right. If none is selected, the icon should not move, as this might also be desired.
(-> Not just one gravity-option per panel)
