Idea #21083: When arranging/sorting, files and folders remain grouped apart

Written by cudjoe the 16 Aug 09 at 20:36. Related project: Nautilus. Status: New
Rationale
When viewing a directory content, after sorting the view files and folders are still separated in two groups.

For example, this prevents the user to really sort items by modification date like a good old 'ls -lrt':

Nautilus shows :
- folder y | 2009-08-01
- folder x | 2009-07-01
- folder w | 2009-06-01
- file b | 2009-08-01
- file a | 2009-07-01
- file c | 2009-06-01

In addition, if the user has many folders, it will have to scroll to view last modified files !

Solution #1: Add checkbox option in context menu

Something like "group folders apart files" along "reverse order" etc.

Solution #2: Add a checkbox in nautilus preferences
Written by icanzilb the 25 Aug 09 at 10:05.
When one likes better grouped separately folders and files, he should be able to group them permanently using a checkbox in Nautilus preferences. I think there's no need to clutter the context menu, while this is rather a preference.

I think this is of big help when the user is to navigate trough several levels of subdirectories to find a file in let's sat : /dir1/dir2/dir3/dir4/targetfile.txt.

Sorry to say it, but in Windows Explorer it's much easier, while all folder icons are on the top of the list, while on Mac OSX and Ubuntu it's rather annoying to look alphabetically trough the icons to find where the next folder you need to go trough.

Great idea !
