Idea #21075: Ubuntu One Backup Client

Written by k.raugstad the 16 Aug 09 at 06:52. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Hi,

I have been using Ubuntu One for some days, and its great to have an online storage.

Im using Windows XP on my work computer, i have an Apple iMac desktop computer running OSX and tree laptops running Ubuntu.

OSX/Windows/Linux does not speak the same language when it comes to filesystems. Due to this, backup has been a problem, i cant use my external harddrive on all systems.

Due to my backup problem i started thinking that it would be great to have an application that did backup automatically.

Solution #1: Ubuntu One Backup Client
Written by k.raugstad the 16 Aug 09 at 06:52.
You should develop a software that allowed you to click on whatever you wanted backed up both folders and settings, and the system uploaded / synced with the online backup automatically.

I think that there is a lot of people that would pay the 10$ a month to have their /Pictures folder monitored and automatically backed up.

Solution #2: Make Ubuntu One pricing the same as http://www.badongo.com
Written by ubby the 29 Aug 09 at 08:58.
Make Ubuntu One also as a backup service were you have Unlimited Storage Space.
And make the pricing the same as http://www.badongo.com so it will be very attractive.

This will also be very interesting for companies.

Ubuntu One is already doing that.

Is there anything specific that you would like to have and it is not implemented yet? Otherwise I will mark this idea as already implemented.

I cant see that Ubuntu One is doing anything but being a folder that i can drag and drop files to.

What i would like is that if i right clicked on a there would be a choice "Add to Ubuntu One Backup" - And after i made that choice, that folder would be backed up every X hour.

It would also be nice if it was posible to implement backup of contacts from Evolution, emails, calender notes and web browser bookmarks.

Please edit your rationale and solution to add that information. It would make your idea much more understandable.

I even suggest separating each idea into a different solution. For example, right click mark for Ubuntu One - a separate solution, selecting to backup settings from various applications - another idea, etc.

I have already reported a similar feature request.

Since you've got lots of computers, you could use Bacula for backup somehow ...

Once ubuntuone supports following symbolic links, the use of encfs makes secure backups fairly straightforward and it could be scripted.

I don't see a reason to vote Solution #3 down because you only will get better from it.
