Idea #21030: horizontal continuous view (leftto right) in evince document viewer

Written by futurenow123 the 12 Aug 09 at 20:25. Related project: Evince Document Viewer. Status: New
Rationale
Can you make it so that instead of scrolling down to the next page, that I would scroll left or right to the next page. This would in a way emulate touch screen flicking with a hand giving a nicer book reading experience . Here is a sketch

|---------| |---------|
| | | |
| text | ===>> | text |
| | | |
|---------| |---------|

instead of going continuously down, which is tiresome .Sideways like I'm suggesting will make it more fluid booklike and this will make document reading alot easier

I think there should be a plugin switch up/down left/right continuous type . how hard can it be to code .

Solution #1: changing evince
Written by futurenow123 the 12 Aug 09 at 20:25.
Evince needs to be changed to allow for continuous down and continuous sideways viewing of the pages ; Which themselves will not need to be rotated . Just as illustrated :

|---------| |---------|
|---------| |---------|
| text | ===>> | text |
|---------| |---------|
|---------| |---------|

the pages are as they are now, but they flow continuously from left to right, if you tick the right setting .

Solution #2: Ensure #1 stays an option
Written by Ssdg the 12 Aug 09 at 20:40.
#1 is a good idea, but I think this should stay an option.
So let's keep the default evince behavior and offer this feature to people who switch it on.

You can show two pages at once. On a widescreen monitor, they fit and are readable. If you scroll horizontically or vertically does not matter to me.

I like this idea, and maybe when GNOME 3.0 comes out, we can use Clutter to do a nice Flip effect (like actually turning the page?).

maybe add the flipping feature, so it makes the experience better.

It's not about two pages on screen . It's about page transition not down but sideways . It's an option the user ,I believe, will like to have . It shouldn't be something hard or long to code since practically it's only a modification setting . Ubuntu is about giving choice . Tell me please what operating system has the choice of scrolling sideways as a real book ! None . Ubuntu can be the first one .

Touchscreen devices are the future of mobile computing. As such who wouldn't want to have a tablet like ipad or HPslate or Notiion Ink, etc and run Ubuntu on them! We need this slide feature to add book reading as a great passtime on ubuntu.
