Idea #2097: KDE Improvement in Kubuntu !

Written by Dark Star the 1 Mar 08 at 09:36. Category: Graphics. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Hi
I have been using KDE on Kubuntu now.. unlike Ubuntu, kubuntu fails to have gr8 tools.. Like Fspot for Image like .png etc..There is no KDM theme installer ! How about adding the sane in Kubuntu 8.10 ? The installation of Icon theme , GTK theme too is a pain. Manual Installation is nearly impossible and if somehow I add Icon for in ~/.kde/share/icons/ the entry for manually added icon did not appear in Icon Manager ! KDE comes with some cool gr8 games but Kubuntu doesn't even come with 1 ,, Adding few games would be lot better idea. After all we tux lovers do love to play..How about adding Gimp as the default Image editing s/w in Kubuntu . Kubuntu by default looks like an incomplete Os.. Therefore I think addition of these would result in a gr8 KDE OSs...

Let me summarize I added ..

1. Fspot/Gnome Picture like Image Viewer with support for PNG images.I mean the gnview do show them but do not show additional layers and masks.
2. KDM Theme Manager.
3. Ease of Installation of Icons and themes which are not available in .deb and are poorly configured..
3. Addition of few 3d KDE games.
4. Implementation of Image Manipulation Tools. like Gimp.
5. GFX Grub in Kubuntu.,
6. A new Nice theme with a new Boot Splash ... How about this Brain Storm http://www.ubuntu-art.org/content/show.php/Animated+boot+splash?content=75155

7. Please provide Metallic Stickers .. The current 1 is not suitable for Laptops. and looks tad gaudy .. Also you include Ubuntu stickers in Kubuntu CD pack please make separate stickers for Kubuntu..

Hope Ubuntu/Kubuntu team will come with some solutions ..]

Regards

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #2097
Written by Dark Star the 1 Mar 08 at 09:36.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #2097 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

1. For images: gwenview
2. KDM Theme Manager: in kcontrol
3. These should be packaged for apt. A lot already are.
4. Krita
5. Agreed, but there's another entry here for graphical grub (I think the term used is "slick").
6. Agreed.
7. Agreed, but these should all be posted as different ideas.

Keep kubuntu clear of gtk applicaions an ubuntu clear of QT applications. As a kubuntu user i have choosen to use kde above gnome(gtk) and if i realy need/want a gtk application i can install it.

I hope they choose KDE applications above others if they exist and only use a gtk application if there isn't a QT application.

4. krita was the image manipulation application for a time but they somehow pulled it out again.

Krita gets put on or taken off the CD depending on whether there is space.

Aluminum case badges / "Metallic Stickers": Metal stickers were ordered by the Ubuntu Massachusetts LoCo Team (www.ubuntu-ma.us). Only Ubuntu ones were ordered because we need a very large order to make it cost effective. If you are interested in Kubuntu ones in the next batch, please contact us and commit to a large order. You might want to coordinate this with your LoCo.

@ Lee Gnview do open .png images but it doesn't show layers if present in layers like Fspot ;)

Hope they add 1 soon ;)

@ Lee Gnview is not good Image View.. It fails to show Transparent Layers and all.. It shows transparent layer as checkered layer .. Check the screenshot

I've also voted for this. I would like to see KDE more polished and integrated for KUbuntu (as good as or better than openSUSE's) and I hope the newer releases will have the option of using the latest KDE3 instead of KDE4. I'm not yet ready for the whole "new desktop paradigm" thing with KDE4 :)

Thanks guys./. Do posts more suggestion.. aren't there any Kubuntu user out there ?

browny_amiga wrote on the 15 Mar 08 at 00:28
sure there are.

I agree to the deficiencies. But let's face it:
How can one live with one QT or only GTK apps? Impossible, if you want to be fully and efficiently productive!
Some are best in GTK, some are best in QT.

But the Gimp should be the standard graphics program in Kubuntu too, since nothing comes even close and the brand name is there (and people want it and will feel confused if it is not there)
People should not regret to use Kubuntu, so give them the best apps the world has. Koffice is ok (because it is simple), but substituting OpenOffice with it (and not installing OO) would be crazy too, right?

Amarok is far beyond any otehr player.
The Window manager is way faster in KDE.
KDE is written in C++ -> far better to maintain (watch GNOME KDE development)
