Idea #20736: Ask other open source projects to get involved in Ubuntu Brainstorm

Written by ubby the 20 Jul 09 at 11:43. Related project: brainstorm.ubuntu.com. Category: Others. Status: New
Rationale
On the brainstorm site you can place your idea for different opensource projects but are the project developers really watching at the brainstorm website for ideas?
Now Gimp has it's own brainstorm:
http://gimp-brainstorm.blogspot.com/
It will be easier if there is one brainstorm for all the projects and that the projects are involved with it.

If I now place a idea for example for Gimp I don't know if the Gimp project knows about my idea.

Solution #1: Make other opensource projects more involved in the Ubuntu Brainstorm
Written by ubby the 20 Jul 09 at 11:43.
Let the people from the other opensource projects place comments on ideas and make it possible for them to put a idea in development or Implemented.

Solution #2: Recognize people from a project
Written by ubby the 20 Jul 09 at 11:46.
Give the people from a project a group name for example like "name - Gimp project".
This way we can see if our idea is checked by one of the people from the Gimp project.

Solution #3: Move Brainstorm to Launchpad and make it multi-project, like bugs
Written by Shnatsel the 25 Jul 09 at 09:59.
Move Brainstorm to Launchpad and implement project-targeted sections, like in existing Bugs service.

Solution #4: Subscribe to project ideas
Written by McIvor the 29 Jul 09 at 23:30.
Already there is an option to filter the list of ideas by project, and an RSS feed that you can subscribe too.
Why not combine the two, and have feeds or some other sort of notification of ideas tagged with a certain project? Developers can then subscribe to the feed for their own project and be notified when a new idea is proposed.

Well, the thing is that what you suggest is basically Ubuntucentrism :) I'm sorry for the disgusting terminology, but I can't find a better word :)

The GIMP's brainstorm is quite specific and relies on graphics. If you read its description, it basically states that

a) the illustration should be self-explanatory, and if it isn't, then the idea probably isn't going to work. ubuntu's brainstorm is, however, text oriented.

b) discussions do not take place (reasons are good and valid and they are listed there).

So I don't see how this can work for GIMP.

And I don't really believe that it's going to work for Scribus, whose developers are mailing list and IRC people, not forum people. They have their ways of communicating to users and these ways basically do work. It's just the way things are, whether you like it or not.

However, these days way when Canonical hosts a number of interdistribution projects like GNOME Shell I can see how some other projects could participate in the brainstorm.

I think it is much easier to have a central location to place ideas.
There isn't a easier way to do that than on Ubuntu Brainstorm.
People don't want to use a difficult way to get involved by placing ideas.

Maybe you can change te title in:
Ask other opensource projects to get involved in the Ubuntu Brainstorm

Thank you:-)

My friend and I set out to solve this problem by buying braintempest.com, which was intended to be used to provide democratic feedback to any and all organizations, from Apple to Google to the US government to the GIMP project.

This software has some serious potential. Let's not limit it.

BrainTempest. Feedback for the Future.

Basically we got nowhere because we have no clue how to administrate a brainstorm installation.

If you take over the project, I'll buy the domain from my friend for you.

If you build it, they will come.

Ubuntu Brainstorm is Ubuntu's brainstorm!

ubby wrote on the 3 Aug 09 at 07:58
@Ari, you can place ideas for different projects on the Ubuntu Brainstorm and not only for Ubuntu.
If you place a idea you can choose by "Related project" between different projects like Gimp, Inkscape etcetera but also Launchpad.
As you can see it is not only a Brainstorm for the Ubuntu OS but also for it's related projects.

A single-point-of-submission makes life easier for some users, but more complicated for some projects. How can we adapt to make Brainstorm useful for projects?

Take, for example, the endless Brainstorm ideas for newer-and-better art. Fred took a photo that will make a cool wallpaper, and submits it to Brainstorm. The Ubuntu Art Team doesn't use Brainstorm, since it bypasses it's own submission guidelines and filtering process. So Fred's cool submission is ignored, though voted up.

Should a Brainstorm Reviewer refer Fred to the Ubuntu Art Team Wiki to resubmit? (The bureaucratic answer. Also the current answer)

Should a volunteer liason or project rep offer to mentor Fred through the correct submission process? (The community answer)

Should a volunteer simply submit it for Fred? (The wishful-thinking answer)

Should Brainstorm be modified to ask for additional information to more closely conform with some project needs? For example, if Fred's idea is in the 'Art' or 'Theme' or 'Wallpaper' categories, Brainstorm prompts for the same information as the Art Team submission page so they can use it. (The OMG, what-a-nightmare-to-maintain answer)
