Idea #2055: should be able to reinstall os w/o losing everything

Written by walter_j the 1 Mar 08 at 05:45. Category: Installation. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
xp could reinstall the os years ago w/o reformating the hd. i've had to reinstall kubuntu 2x after disasters - no idea what went wrong, but had to reinstall and losing all data. i had a backup, but still: shouldn't it be easier to reinstall?

A new surge that's taking place is for the data to have its own separate /home partition, instead of placing everything inside of /. That way, when you have to reinstall, you can just do that without having to even touch your data.

Maybe Ubuntu should make a partition for /home automatically.

i wondered about that when installing. no way i could figure out how though (noob). trying ubuntu now and love it. i think comiz created a lot of my crashes. wish it was easier to use

Separate partition for /home is a new idea? New when, in 1971? It's just not done be default for ubuntu, and that's the problem.

Change nothing. The existing system is fine.

Backup tools are FREE and easily available via Synaptic, or just CRON and a script. The system is usually stable enough.

If you experiment with bleeding edge bling without a backup...you lose all your data.
