Idea #20512: Auto-Emptying Folders

Written by Anto the 3 Jul 09 at 11:21. Category: Others. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Sometimes, you may have a folder where you save screen dumps, short documents as quick notes and such... Either you do manually have to clean up there, or many files will be piled up there.

I think that's why there is a trash folder, isn't it? But that solution could definitely be implemented there (and maybe just there).

that's what cron jobs are for...

This is, defiitely, a VERY BAD idea.

A computer, a system, an apllication, must never, NEVER, destroy or modify user data (like pictures and notes) without a clear instruction from the user.

Anto wrote on the 4 Jul 09 at 16:19
@Rakudave:
Yeah, but this is much easier to configure.

@Pubsbin:
The user have given a clear instruction. He/she sets this system up, and gives exact information for what specific folder to do it for, and exact information for how old the files must be before they get removen. This function is of course 100% optional, and will only affect the specified folder/directory.

If you are looking for a GUI into cron, maybe take a look here to get started: http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/cronweb.htm

Solution #2 (cron GUI) is implemented in the gnome-schedule package

but cron in ubuntu cannot run gui apps without variable export workaround due to years old bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/at/+bug/94933
