Rationale
When there is only one User on the Computer, the GDM Login makes no sense.
It makes the User think that his Data is secure while in fact it isn't as anybody can get root privileges choosing the recovery mode in grub or using a LiveCD ...
You could argue the same in the other direction: "you could easily configure your gdm to not auto login". Just because it's the way it is now, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
And I, for one, don't see it as an *useful* layer of security (for most users)
in combination with http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/1721/ autologin would be secure and convenient. And for a single user system there is actually no need for a login windows at all.
