Idea #20393: Add Blackberry tethering support to Network Manager

Written by bretthoward the 24 Jun 09 at 03:42. Related project: Network Manager. Status: New
Rationale
There are several ways to make blackberry tethering work in Ubuntu but none of them are anywhere near user friendly. Simply connecting a Windows Mobile phone to my computer allows Network Manager to use it as a modem. RIM has more smart phones on the market than any other company. This is a method of getting online that would benefit a lot of people!

Solution #1: Auto detect blackberry phones as a modem when they are connected
Written by bretthoward the 24 Jun 09 at 03:42.
Support Blackberry devices as PPP devices when they are connected. It would be nice if this would be able to support these devices when connected via USB and Bluetooth.

I've had trouble making this work well via USB. It connects and works but then python crashes on me.. although this tool claims to make it work:

I've posted how to make it work when using Bluetooth here:

Most of the information used to generate the above post on crackberry was gleaned from this Ubuntu help page:

Solution #2: Use Barry Project as a solution
Written by ryanli the 15 Jul 09 at 12:30.
Barry( http://sourceforge.net/projects/barry/ ) is a project for making Blackberry devices work on GNU/Linux and many other OS such as FreeBSD.

Barry not only supports Blackberry tethering, also provides contact, calendar sync using opensync. A graphical interface for data backup/restore is also available.

Maybe we can include the whole set of Barry in future versions.

Barry is already included in Karmic's repository, to tether Blackberry, follow these steps:
1) Install `libbarry0' and `barry-utils'.
2) Plug-in your blackberry.
3) run `sudo pppd call ppp script'.
