Solution #1: Ubuntu Grub Backround
Written by MattFinck21 the 21 Jun 09 at 07:18.
i was thinking that ubuntu team should design an default ubuntu grub backround for future releases..or atleast add them to the current ones. after all it would go nice after seeing the linux mint did that.

Solution #2: let the user choose
Written by lasl92260 the 23 Jun 09 at 15:59.
The user should be prompt during the installation process if he wants to add an image to grub or not.
You should also make a preview of the page how it will apear with the selected image...

Solution #3: same as #2 but not durring installation
Written by lasl92260 the 23 Jun 09 at 16:06.
The same as #2 but without adding it by default, you should add an option in [System]>[prefs]>[sessions] to let the user choose when he wants to...

Solution #4: Design a GUI to help with the process of changing the image
Written by Rodrigo the 12 Jul 09 at 15:31.
Let's stay with the black screen or maybe a screen, but just one to begin with, then with the use of a GUI (the user can download it from the servers) be able to change it without needing to go to the console.
Everybody likes to customize his machine sooner or later.

that could be problematic if the display doesnt work correctly. and you have to think about size. ubuntu CD's are full to the brim at 699mb last time i checked... my guess is they cant afford to put extra friill where it really isnt needed.

How about remove a screensaver to make room?

With Grub1, I'd have said no, but now that we're migrating to Grub2, it would really be a shame not to.

if that happened ubuntu would probably loose a bunch of users.

A CD image EASILY fits on a 1GB flash drive, but with DVDs at about 4.4 GB you would need an 8GB flash drive (which most people don't have) to install it without a DVD drive.

You also have to factor in that you are going to use 5 times the bandwidth and that it will take 5 times to download (over an hour for me compared to 25 minutes!)

There is a lot of stuff in a default install that does not need to be there. We can cut easily cut:

-gimp (F-Spot has more than enough features for Average Joe, others know where it is)
-tomboy (it requires a large mono library base)
-half the screen savers (really people, 50% of them are just plain UGLY)

I'm sure after all that they could fit a freaking png file in there for grub...

Or we could just continue releasing a CD and have a DVD as the suggested option with all of the extras like this.

Darwin Survivor : Gimp is useful, and has to stay on the CD, whereas Tomboy could be removed. (and maybe several screensavers)
