Idea #20006: Selecting photos in F-Spot

Written by mydoghasworms the 26 May 09 at 19:27. Related project: F-Spot Photo Manager. Status: New
Rationale
Although it is possible to select multiple photos in F-Spot (using Ctrl-click) for a single operation like emailing, it becomes difficult when your collection is very large (like hundreds of photos).

Solution #1: Add a photo tray to F-Spot
Written by mydoghasworms the 26 May 09 at 19:27.
Add a photo tray to F-Spot, where you can drag photos, on which you can then perform an action (email, create new online album, etc.)

This is a poor mockup. I imagine you would have an extra button to clear the tray:

This feature is also mentioned here:

Solution #2: Add a checkbox next to each photo
Written by mydoghasworms the 26 May 09 at 19:47.
I've seen this feature on those machines where you print photos. This way you can make the selection and not have to worry about losing your selection when clicking anywhere without Ctrl. Again, I think extra buttons (clear selection, select all/none) would come in handy somewhere.

Solution #3: Combination of #1 and #2
Written by mydoghasworms the 27 May 09 at 05:35.
When you select photos in #2, it would still be nice for all the selected photos to show up in a tray (#1), so that you can see your selection at a glance, because scrolling through many pages of photos to see what has been selected is quite cumbersome.

Dear moderators: Please can you change the title of the idea to "Selecting photos in F-Spot" or something? That is actually the broader idea, and both solutions target it. Many thanks.

#2 Reminds me of the *incredible* feature in Dolphin which has the little (+) or (-) appear in the top corner of the icon on hover. If we could rig something like that, it would be awesome.

Hey McIvor, I knew there was another place I had seen that, but I couldn't remember where. Thanks!

Idea #3, with photos previewable and deselectable from the tray.
