Description
Can the default desktop PLEASE get a facelift? Fresher, happier colors would make my day. (Sure you can customize, but I convert a lot of people to using Ubuntu, and they all say the same thing when they first see it start up: "Its...brown? :("

Agreed. Sure it's easy enough to customise, but can we PLEASE have some nifty background pictures in the default install?

This is already being taken care of. The new look won't make it into 8.04, but will be included in 8.10.

ok, some of us might actually get offended by such a proposal (the word 'beauty' is somewhat misplaced ;)). But instead of bashing this with negative votes one should see, that the idea behind it cannot be neglected easily. The color surely is a cultural issue and in western countries "Its...brown?" is not an unlikely response, whereas in Africa there might be a totally different view on that.
Why not just stick with the origins of humanity and its earthly colors but offer some kind of theme selection as a default once you start installing (Live CD) ubuntu? It could help to spread ubuntu more widely and that's what we all would benefit from.

Yes I agree, Ubuntu had better get rid of that ugly brown interface, or they should at least use another inteface as the default.

While I don't mind the default theme, I always find myself asking why are brown-ish earthy colours the only colours associated with humanity, or Africa. Seems to me that a nice green theme would be interesting (just as an example) Africa's got jungles you know :)

It's brand identity.
Suse uses Green, Fedora uses Blue... Ubuntu uses brown. What's wrong with that? You can change it in a breeze using the appearance panel. You can download new themes from gnome-look and install them grabbing the tar file on the theme manager.
If you don't like brown, change it. But you can't deny that it's a strong design decision that gave Ubuntu a recognizable look. That's a successful choice, even if you don't like brown.

Here's the odd thing.

One guy creates the idea "A GUI theme to rival Aqua", and is currently at +202 (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/498/)

maltepalte creates the idea "Desktop beauty" but is at -29.

Are the ideas really at odds with each other. And let's face it, the colour scheme of Ubuntu has been highly criticised.

Change your theme.

I like the default. I still change themes and backgrounds from time to time.

Don't bloat my distro!

A facelift should be fine...
