Rationale
Create a livecd with some tests to see if a pc is Ubuntu capable. Also give some advice to change incompatible hardware through a list of proven working hardware (all about 'choice').
eg. The scan could show a SiS gfx-card, warn about the lack of 3D in the SiS Closed SOurce drivers and present a list of alternative gfx vendors with nVidia on top (which has superb drivers if you are willing to taint your kernel with Closed Source modules (again: 'all about choice')).
Thus an user could take that cd to a hardware shop and ask if the sales-person could boot that live-cd instead of the other pre-installed OS. So he/she can see if that PC is capable of installing (hence running) Ubuntu in it's intended full glory.
(excuses if my English isn't correct, since it's not my native language).
I needed such a feature when i bought my laptop with a SiS gfx-chipset :-/
It has been bugging me for a long time, only after a lot of tweaking and googling i know for sure SiS doesn't support Linux, and the OpenSource driver maintainer isn't allowed to create 3D support for legal reasons (also, SiS won't give spec's, so Open Source SiS 3D is close to 'nothing').
The reason i wanted such a live-test-cd is that i was in the illusion there would be 'expected' SiS gfx support becouse of the 'general' info i read before i bought the laptop.
Hope this extra background info has some value as 'addendum'.
