Idea #19675: Linux Cluster Support

Written by jrwyatt the 6 May 09 at 17:34. Category: Server. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Ubuntu Server is becoming a viable candidate for the data center. Unfortunately, a key enabler is missing. Clustering support using popular tools would be easy to integrate. RHEL and CentOS have very good clustering support that could be used as a model.

Solution #1: Copy RHEL
Written by jrwyatt the 6 May 09 at 17:34.
RHEL uses several open-source packages to accomplish an enterprise grade clustering solution. I would integrate these packages into Ubuntu server and create a centralized management application similar to RH's luci.

redhat-cluster-suite has been in ubuntu for a long time. I am confused what this idea is for.

Well this is an idea that has been on my head too for long time since I did my thesis a year ago, and well, we already have started a group called ubuntu-ha that will handle packages for HA Clusters. There will be a session in the Karmic UDS that will talk about the Ubuntu Cluster Stack, leaded by Anter Karmatic (ivoks), who is the person that I'm working with in the newly created ubuntu-ha group.

On the other hand, there are also tools such as heartbeat, ipvsadm, pacemaker, openais which are cluster technologies.

I think that having tools to build clusters is one thing, but that support from cluster administration tools such as xCat is quite another thing. I think nthat there would be huge advantages if Ubuntu server were an allowed option for cluster administration tools such as xCat.
