Idea #1964: Live CD program: Hardware compability check

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #40: Create a better hardware database.
Written by tenchi39 the 1 Mar 08 at 00:09. Category: Installation. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
It would be nice to have an icon right next to Install that would bring up a program that would check the hardware against an online database.

It would check everyting from printers to webcams, motherboard and TV capture cards.

The hardware then would be presented in a table with the following grading:

***** - Works out of the box
**** - Works perfectly, but installation is needed (deb file is available online)
*** - Works perfectly but manual non-deb installation is needed
** - Partly usable (most user wouldn't even try installing these, so installation method does not matter much)
* - Not usable (Maybe a link to a related project should be presented)

This program would save a lot of time when dealing with exotic hardware. Imagine that you go to a shop to buy a laptop or a scanner. just pop in the live cd and see if it should be working...

I wonder if a store would let you boot to the Live CD without buying a Computer, I'll bet not. Still its a very good Idea.

Very interesting!

Well, maybe stores like Media Markt or Tesco wouldn't, but at smaller stores where people might heard of linux before they surely would :-D

The suggestion made for the star system and the concept is a very good idea that would allow on-the-fly checks easy to show customers willing to switch their network over.

In Holland stores like MediaMarkt would boot that cd most of the time. You can't sell 'NO' is a common Dutch Proverb.

(Also there's a Proverb saying: "NO is what you've got, YES is what you can get")

I like this idea. Would be good if Ubuntu could pull it off

Yes, yes, and what else... oh yeah, YES.

This would be good, and shouldn't be impossible to code (just need to scan the PCI Id's and sub id's.. Very easy.

there should also be a NON-gui version of this. If your running this off of a live-cd for example and you can't get X running, it would be nice to use from a command line as a backup.

I think there should also be a standalone windows version of this program available on the liveCD and on the website so people can check their hardware compatibility in a known environment (and without problems starting X).
