Idea #195: Simple out of the box interoperability with OS X/Mac

Description
Given the OS X/Mac raise in popularity, and considering OS X is just another Unix and Ubuntu is supposed to be an open system, there should be the possibility of connecting with Mac boxes easily and just by maybe "browsing the net" or something.

Seems to me that currently you have to install and configure several packages and then your luck may vary.

This is a great idea, however Mac has some very odd configurations that really would be difficult to implement. It could be done, but some things (ie cups) would have to be implemented in 2 different ways.

What do you mean by interoperability? We can use samba for file sharing. Daap for audio sharing. VNC for remote desktop access. SSH is on both OS X and Ubuntu. With the bonjour protocol in Pidgin, we can chat with iChat users on the local network.

What more could there be that doesn't have a solution?

HFS support for removable storage devices would be a good place to start.

Another idea posted earlier would be ZFS support, but that's looking further down the road.

HFS is already supported, it will auto-mount as read only, but like ntfs, you can write to it if you want.

I understand that you can use a number of things to get this interoperability. What I mean is that everything should be there and ready in a way that if I have a Mac at home along with my Ubuntu box, I can just, for instance, browse machines , print from one to another, etc. Right our of the box, without fiddling with packages and configuration.

Right now, for instance, even printing to Ubuntu from a OS X box can't be done without going through strange configuration. I just made it work, so I know.
