Prior to Jaunty (and the implementation of notify-osd), messages left while a computer was locked would appear as a notification (using notification-applet).

After notify-osd superceded notification-applet, the default behaviour is to throw a dialogue box onto the screen with the message contents. This is obtrusive and detracts from the polished quality of Ubuntu, as the box is not well designed, either.
