Description
Pretty much every new person trying out Ubuntu has been told to get Automatix. For those not in-the-know, Automatix compiles a list of popular software/codecs/etc. that's useful to a new install of Ubuntu. It would be good to include this or something similar to installs of Ubuntu, thus helping out the user with new programs that don't come by default.

I think that some "Welcome to Ubuntu" window on newly installed system wolud be better. From that window you could choose instalation of most popular software and use the most common installed software (i.e. Firefox or OO.org)

Every post I have seen has strongly suggested to stay away from Automatix, for stability reasons

I think such ideas might cause canonical trouble because of patents and other legal stuff (and crap).

1) automaitix is terrible:

2) Ubuntu already does a decent job between, the restricted driver manager, prompting the user to install codecs, and the restricted extras packages.
3) There's only so much they can do before running afoul with the US government, Canonical is a US chartered corporation, they at least need to make a token effort at complying with patent laws.

Those who are actually "in the know" know that Automatix should never, ever be installed.

I always thought that's what APT is intended for …

In the multimedia section Ubuntu now cooperates with the Automatix developers. The popular project has been offering for some time a simple solution to legally controversial in Ubuntu codecs to integrate.

Automatix is discontinued, as a project has traditionally had less than ideal relations with the Ubuntu development community to say the least, and we've had mechanisms that are technically much saner and more compatible with our goals (the automatic codec installer, Ubufox) for the last few releases.
