Description
Being a linux noob stuck in command line mode is a real bitch. If thats the only computer you have and you don't know what you are doing, you are really pretty much screwed with no apparent choice but to re-install or go back to Windoze. We lose lots of people like this.

It would be nice if a command was included by default... something like "onlinehelp" that would start IRSSI and then enter into the #Ubuntu channel on Freenode where they could get some much needed help and get their system running again.

I think a better alternative is to just use a liveCD. You can logon into any forum, chat, ..., and repair your system at the same time. I think the chroot command helps you executing commands on your hdd based system while using the liveCD.

What about a troubleshooting wizard that figured out your hardware and proper settings for you, without all that mucking about in chat rooms in the first place....And would apt-get you an IRC package and hook you into a help chat only for escalated help.

Let the machine do the work, call on people only for uncommon problems.

I don't think it's installed by default, but you can use "finch" as a console substitute for pidgin.
You can get it using :

"sudo apt-get install finch"
