Description
I recently installed Ubuntu again and I came to a scary conclusion after installation! Some folders appeared in my /home folder? I did not ask for them to be there

Is this an attempt to imitate Windows? There, too, I see strange folders in the 'My Documents' folder. Is this an attempt to make windows users 'feel at home' in Ubuntu?

Personally, I know very few people who actually use these folders.

What I'm trying to say is, maybe we should stick to our own standards and ideas rather than trying to lure Windows users over by imitating them?

Could the -1 voters state their opinions here?

there are other folders thar are for nothing, i´m not in ubuntu, but i know that are other, for example /mnt or /home/plantillas (in spanish pc´s)

(sorry for de bad english)

All useless folders should be removed, although /mnt could be considered useful (I dont use it personally)

I like the folders.

They teach new users how to better organize their files.

Easier for new users to know where they should save stuff.

There's a LOT of other folders there, created on the fly.
Some of them dot initiated (hidden).
So, should the criteria apply to all those folder?
Do you want a clean home folder?
Delete them!

For a regular user would be much more intuitive the way it is now.

I personally didn't like having them created, but I can see their worth for new users. If you don't need them, delete them, but otherwise, let it stand.

Obviously not the hidden folders, no. Those are configuration files and have always been there in any version of Ubuntu. I'm talking about the recently added windows-style media folders.

I grew up with windows which had those folders, but I've always found them annoying.

I was going to make them anyway. I am a neat freak on my computer, not so much elsewhere.

I can see what he's saying, and I do agree that at the very least they should be configurable/optional upon install or even after with the help of some utility (graphical, I mean).

I personally dislike the extra Windows-style folders (documents, media, etc) in the /home directory. I immediately delete them. The OS should provide functionality, not dictate policy.

i agree 100% although i want to add for those who say for the new users, i didnt know where to save my files first time i had a 'linux' distro which wasnt ubuntu, it was a bit embarrasing asking where should i save my personal files, but i propose that their should be a Document's folder in /home//Documents/ and you make your own folders as you please, i find putting personal docs in a folder that contains config files arent very professional, even if they are hidden, its annoying sometimes, even /home//Documents/ like music for branch off would be a nice solution

I beleive those folders are there for some Linux interoperability project, so that programs have a set place to look in the home folder for files. e.g. Amorak knows to look in the Music folder rather than having to ask you where your songs are.

keen101 wrote on the 1 Mar 08 at 08:33
If they are needed by programes, then they should stay. otherwise they just clutter up the home directory! I hate those folders.

@sci-fi guy

In my opinion, programs should _always_ ask you where your files are. As angrypenguin very well said, The OS should provide functionality, not dictate policy.

I don't like at all those folders too and the reason why they are here.

Ubuntu do not have to teach/oblige people to store their datas somewhere.
People see those folders and dummily put their data on it without thinking about doing it in another way (in their _own_ way)
For me, it's totally against the philosophy of Ubuntu.

This new feature is for me so weird, it's the first time that ubuntu disappoint me.

So +1
And please, encourage people to think by themselve instead of being always stupidily drived.

I've always had to create them on my own, I'm quite happy they put them in by default. I like my files being organized and consistent and all. :]

It's not hard to select all > delete if you don't want them.

tomtom_fr wrote on the 27 Mar 08 at 15:59
It's not hard either to create them. And better, you can do it _like YOU want_ !!

My files are also well organized, but they are not in the /home folder (because I think that it's just stupid to store them there...)

And I dont't want to delete them every 6 month ... :very_angry:

And again: please let poeple thinking by themselve. Don't try to drive them like sheeps. It _never_ helps

These folders are a great default add-on. Common dialogues can now realiably link to these folders making it easier to reach our commonly used files.

To customize the folder paths, simple change ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs to reflect your setup.

Ubuntu is Linux for a general audience. If you prefer thinking for yourself you might want to try Gentoo or similar.

A more suitable brainstorm idea might be "Ask for confirmation and/or allow user to specify folder locations before creating Document, Videos, Music etc folders" ?
