Idea #19236: Using TABS and SIDEBAR in Nautlus should be improved.

Written by R3DKn16h7 the 15 Apr 09 at 19:01. Related project: Nautilus. Status: New
Rationale
Using TABS and SIDEBAR in Nautlus (or Terminal and Gedit) should not be a "mouseless" activity.

When I would open a new TAB in Nautilus I must use the Keyboard: this is an important limitation.

Normally user don't uses keyboard's shortcuts: they prefers a clickable button.

Moreover sidebar is in Nautilus useful, BUT it would be grat to show more than ONE feature at time (tree, bookmarks, resources, informations, ...)

Solution #1: New options in "Preferences -> Behavior"
Written by R3DKn16h7 the 15 Apr 09 at 19:02.
In Nautilus would be great to include in "Preferences -> Behavior" some OPTIONAL stuff:
1) allow to always show the TAB space (like in Firefox);
2) allow to add a "new tab" button somewhere;
2) allow to add new SIDEBAR (one on the left, one on the right and maybe one on the bottom) with different contents (resources, informations, ...);
2) a) allow to separate the sidebar to show TWO things on each side.

Here there is a simply mokup:

It's not a revolutionary idea but it can be very useful: use TAB only with a Shortcut isn't for all great...

I hope this will be improved.

Moreover first two options could be implemented in Terminal and Gedit.

It was great if nautilus have show sidebars checkbox in view menu(at right of zoom/zoom out buttons).

Solution #4: Single-window mode option
Written by Psycho_zs the 22 Apr 09 at 12:15.
Like similar option in firefox: When you open a folder (by external command or from desktop), it should open in the new tab of existing nautilus window.

Solution #5: allow adding a tab by double click on the tab bar or a tab button
Written by ubuntuuser the 27 May 09 at 16:15.
It will be easier for users if a new tab could be opened by just double clicling on the tab bar. we do have "ctrl+t" for a new tab or "file->new tab" but allowing double click to open a new tab would be a very handy option.
the other alternative may be to have a new tab button at one end of the tab bar like we have in firefox 3.5b4.

+1. I would like to see better tap integration in nautilus. Another good idea is open folder in new tab.

It'wouldn't be work: if I must to go on /usr/share/apps/konqueror/ nautilus open 4 TAB:
/usr/
/usr/share/
/usr/share/apps/
/usr/share/apps/konqueror/

#2 What folder would it open? Nautilus would need to know exactly which folder you plan to put it in!

darwin, the folder you draged.

We can connect the idea with idea about making path item as file(add context menu to it and allow drag files on top of it).
