Idea #19221: Droid fonts as default OS fonts in Ubuntu

bug This idea was marked as being not considered for implementation the 8 October 11.
Written by colindean the 14 Apr 09 at 19:36. Related project: Gnome. Status: Won't implement
Rationale
The recently released Droid fonts were developed for Google Android by Ascender, a leading typography foundry. These fonts were released with the Apache License, and have been packaged for release in Jaunty (and available in PPAs for Intrepid and prior).

This font is easier to read, cleaner, and more professional looking than DejaVu and Bitstream Vera, the two commonly used application and menu fonts. Personally, I've used Free Sans for as long as I can remember, and Droid looks better than it.

FYI, the ttf-droid package is already in the Jaunty repos.

Note: If you are suggesting a font-replacement, please provide a link to an image of the font. Preferably with a comparison to the original.

No italics, or bolds in monospace version - useless for some programmers. They also have a lot less characters than the current defaults. They are designed for Android - which means hinting is not as good as in dejavu.
Also that's a subjective opinion, but these serifs look too condensed for a normal screen + they create very strong horizontal guides, with the small 't', scaled 'S' and others. They may be very good on android and look cool for some applications on a PC, but they would be a quite bad default :/

After reading this i just gave them a go and they really don't look as good as the current fonts.

ALSO CONSIDER REDUCING THE SIZE.

maybe droid are not the best option..

BUT having a system font, nice and different from MS and MAC original typhography could beneffit Ubuntu to get an original image.

Using Droid Sans 10. and looks nice.

Droid fonts are the best option. They are MUCH better than those fonts set in Ubuntu by default. Install ttf-droid package from repositories and see them for yourself. The author should have attached screenshots to the idea, there would be more votes in this case.

I have tried reducing the vera fonts to 9pts (using droid 10pts now), it doesn't look as nice. The advantage of droid is that its THIN, maybe I am just too used to Winblows style.

I think that users migrating from windows xp would choose Liberation Sans size 8 (while desktop is 96dpi)

I like Droid fonts. But Dejavu Condensed looks very nice too.

Canonical decided to develop it's own Ubuntu font.
