Idea #19119: Evolution : new email address is not memorized when a message is sent

Written by lalejand the 9 Apr 09 at 13:00. Related project: Evolution Mail and Calendar. Status: New
Rationale
Today Evolution only auto-memorizes an email when you do a reply. If you write an email to someone that is not in your address book, the email is not auto-memorized.
--------

Solution #1: Auto-add the email address in the address book
Written by lalejand the 9 Apr 09 at 13:00.
The new contact with the new email should be added in the address book automatically when a message is sent to someone that is not in the address book.
-----
[in french] Le nouveau contact avec la nouvelle adresse mél devrait être automatiquement ajouté dans le carnet d'adresses quand un message est envoyé à quelqu'un qui ne figure pas dans la carnet d'adresses.

Solution #2: Same as solution 1 but with a checkbox
Written by lalejand the 9 Apr 09 at 13:03.
Add a checkbox (checked by default) in the new message window that would add the contacts in the address book if checked.
-----
[in french] Ajouter une boîte de sélection (marquée par défaut) dans la fenêtre de rédaction d'un mél qui ajouterait le ou les contacts dans le carnet d'adresses si elle est marquée.

Solution #3: Use a Collected Addresses solution similar to Thunderbird
Written by jamesisin the 14 Apr 09 at 20:00.
Thunderbird, if so instructred and by default, will place all e-mail addresses into a special address book called Collected Addresses. It's a kind of safety net. You can always dig back through it and extract something you'd forgotten to take care of earlier.

I don't like my programs automatically remembering things. Sometimes I'll send a one-time email to a support site or something, and I do not want that cluttering up my address book.

I would like to see it with a button to add them, but please don't do this automatically.

On an initial send you only have an email address, why put that into the address book. It makes more sense to add it if you get a reply, that way it can record the email and the name of the contact.

Reply to timnwells: it can always complete it with the name later. To Darwin Survivor: agree, solution 2 sounds good though.

Ahem, Edit/Preferences/Mail Preferences/Automatic Contacts. Might be enabled by default though.
