Idea #1907: Officially release virtually

Description
Please consider releasing pre-configured virtual machines with every build. This includes Virtual PC, VMWare, and any other viable VM player.

I tried for a long time to get to know Ubuntu, but I was not going to install it unless it was contained in a VM, and I had a chance to learn and understand it.

Working properly as a VM is CRITICAL in getting worldwide acceptance. We're still in a Windows world. Mac is figuring that out. Linux needs to as well.

Anyone who tried to install on Virtual PC probably got frustrated and walked away like I did for a while... Anyone who wants to run a VM, why make them install to a VM?

The nice thing about this idea is that it is really easier to do. Shouldn't take 1 person more than 2 hours on release day!

Agreed that it should be VM safe. One thing though, you may be in a Windows world, I however, have left the building and am wondering among the trees, meadows, mountains, and brooks. ;) FOSS.

There is official Ubuntu VMWare image.

VMWare is not free (as in "free lunch"), whereas Microsoft Virtual PC is. Therefore I think Ubuntu should focus more on functioning in MS VPC than in VMWare. Sure, neither of them are truly free (as in "free speech"), but VPC is "more free" than VMWare.

Granted, VPC is designed to hold Windows machines, and it is a hell to install Ubuntu on it. (No support for 24-bit colour means that the installer won't even start in the default configuration, no floppy support, no scroll wheel support, no high resolution support, etc...) Although one could argue that Microsoft broke it, it can still be fixed by Ubuntu.

Also, anyone who disagrees that we are living in a Windows world should open their windows and look at the world. (Pun intended.) More than half of the western population have never even touched a computer running anything else than Windows.

Distribute a modified version of VirtualBox OSE with an Ubuntu VM included. Fully GPL solution.

Linux already figured this out and made Wubi.
