Idea #19054: More education programs, more unified education programs

Written by tumaru the 5 Apr 09 at 19:58. Related project: Edubuntu. Status: New
Rationale
whenever i look into the edubuntu i always see a handful of programs that looked like they were developed in the 80's. this is 2009 not 1996 having a very simple typing program as your holy grail is embarrassing. if you really need ideas go out and buy a bunch of education programs like math blaster or something (not that im saying you should just copy them, just the opposite, be original and make programs that are so much better then windows jaws drop)

Solution #1: fun to learn equals fun to exist equals linux wins
Written by tumaru the 5 Apr 09 at 19:58.
you could make a program to learn linux, in a fun hands on way (ref tv show: lost) who can fix the system in time to type in the numbers.

how about a programing game that teaches you to do simple edits at first then expands upwards to full programs.

how about programs that ease the change from windows users who sell stuff and use CRM software as a main staple in business to the ease and proficiency of ubuntu.

Solution #2: Encourage universities and other higher education schools to contribute
Written by yanick.rochon the 20 Apr 09 at 03:29.
There are many ways to encourage universities or anyone as a matter of fact to contribute in making quality educational programs. For example, why not have a StatGraphics equivalent on Ubuntu? Many schools would actually benefit from that and students would learn about Ubuntu (thus spread the word). And not only universities, but any student, or anyone.

Other ideas:
-Chemisty: name this molecule (multi levels of difficulty)
-Physics: Electricity (ex: electronic board builder)
-Physics: Static & Dynamic (vector calculator - 2d/3d)
-etc.

How can we make educational games/programs worthwhile for volunteer developers to work on? Prestige? Community? Bounties? Resume building?

What projects are working on educational games and applications, so non-developers can contribute?
