Idea #18853: Ubuntu Line of Laptops/PCs

bug This idea was marked as implemented the 28 March 09.
Written by devz0r the 27 Mar 09 at 13:57. Related project: ubuntu.com. Status: Implemented
Rationale
Apple has a great thing going on in the line of "Macbooks", and I think that a line of Ubuntu Laptops would be a great idea to promote FLOSS and ensure hardware compatability. Ubuntu and FLOSS could enter even more into the mainstream and third-party software makers might start adding more support for Linux, and people might start making more FLOSS when they realize there is a market for it.

Selected solution (#1): Ship Ubuntu laptops
Written by devz0r the 27 Mar 09 at 13:57.
Canonical might create a division that could manufacture these computers. It could have a nice look going on with the shell of the laptop, put the Ubuntu symbol on the front in full color, allow full customization of the laptop (choice of webcam, easy choice of hardware performance, color, etc.), be as green-conscious as possible, ensure hardware compatability by using hardware developers that develop with support for the open-source community, and so on. We could create a nice quality laptop that is still much less expensive than the competition by including Ubuntu on it.

However, that would make more enemies in the hardware industry. Ubuntu works very fast as is for how functional and good looking it is compared to Windows. Yet it doesn't have hardware exclusivity. Where it's at right now as long as compatibility keeps getting better is the best position it could be.

Also of note is System76, a computer hardware distributor that makes systems with it's focus on exclusive Ubuntu compatibility. This idea seems very moot in light of all this.
