Who cares about Adobe, we should put our efforts behind free alternatives such as swfdec and gnash. Time to shed the proprietary crap.

You are certainly right, but until then, ...

I partially agree with bigdufstuff about using gnash, but it is anything but up to par with Adobe's flash 9. I would very much like to see a version for AMD64.

Well at the moment both are severely lacking, so the issue remains. Not to mention that there's no Shockwave for Linux.

@bigdufstuff There is a separate idea for your concern. Just vote on that one. I did.

They may be lacking, but the point is, if we are going to fix something, it makes the most sense to fix what is already Free Software.

Interestingly you also voted down my idea "Don't just ignore our Flash problems". Not ignoring them could also mean putting money and effort into Gnash. However, if you oppose any trial to find out how important that is to people neither Adobe will fix this nor will anybody fund Gnash development!

No way; the open versions are even worse than the adobe ones. I hate a "only" this or that world. I like having updates from commercial software companies, especially if it is their particular format we are using.
We should strive for interoperability. If adobe creates an update for their product. It should work, and we shouldn't have to recreate their effort.

@berlinbrown: For each user who support proprietary software in Ubuntu there are ten that do not, I guess. I'm one of those... and now, I'll go back to hacking a little over swfdec, instead of hoping that Adobe cares about that 3% of the market share and its pletora of different sound systems and packaging systems and configurations and all...

If you want Flash fixed, this probably would appeal to you too: "I would donate a Dollar for a FREE fully-featured FLASH plugin" http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/1895/

Gnash is great for FOSS, but I'd prefer it if Adobe stepped up to the plate and provided.

The only problem I have with Flash is that I need to install it because Ubuntu doesn't bundle it. Ubuntu should negotiate with Adobe to include it by default. Other distros do it, too...

Probono: Ubuntu states clearly that they don't come with proprietary software. That's not going to change. If you want it to come with proprietary stuff, try LinuxMint instead.
"I partially agree with bigdufstuff about using gnash, but it is anything but up to par with Adobe's flash 9. I would very much like to see a version for AMD64." Ditto! I have an AMD64 and getting that "Would you like to install Flash?" message is driving me nuts! While I will certainly up-vote idea #1128, it would only take a minute to remind Adobe that, yes lots of people _do_ use Linux.
