Idea #18615: Package managers should be able to multitask

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #7108: More than one synaptic running.
Written by koenfloris the 14 Mar 09 at 23:54. Related project: Update manager. Status: New
Rationale
currently, if i install a huge update, or something else with package-managers, i get the message: "there is already a package-manager running"

i just want to give the orders already. so they will get applied when the other manager is done.

Solution #2: Have a daemon to manage the packages
Written by twocool the 17 Mar 09 at 00:09.
That daemon could have a queue.
The only problem with this is that it can lead to conflicts, like a user starting the installation of software #1 and then trying to install software #2 which is incompatible with software #1, so the daemon should detect this kind of situation.

Installing few packages at the same time may lead to crash whole packaging system. No way.

There is a daemon and it's called "packagekit". It's being rolled out... whether it will allow multi-threaded installs / not sure / but this doesn't seem like a good idea.
