Description
I have a dual boot system with one Windows XP hard drive for gaming and another Ubuntu hard drive for everything else.
Upon downloading and installing kernel updates, it always seems to re-write my grubmenu.lst which removes Windows XP from the boot menu. I then have to manually tweak my grubmenu.lst file so it shows up in the list of boot options.
This is annoying and most n00bs wouldn't know how to fix this.

There are provisions in the menu.lst for static entries as well as dynamic ones. Read the docs.

The reason it messes with it is when it updates the kernel and that is because if it didn't you would still be using the old one. Also, you have to put windows AFTER the ##End of debian automagic list## line, and they won't be erased.

There is already a Launchpad blueprint for Hardy which involves making menu.lst less confusing, including clarifying the difference between static and dynamic entries.

I use to put GAG into MBR and GRUB into the Linux partition. This is less annoying for the rest of my family. Since GAG allows to boot automatically an OS, I choose one of them to get her/him ready without calling me for support. :-P

@ Smartboyathome
I didn't know you could do that. :P
I'll have to try it, what I do currently is backup my menu.lst, and just copy and past my Windows entry into the new menu.lst.

You set your menu.lst up wrong then.
Windows goes after the Automagic stuff is over. If you want it to be default boot, count which number it is, and put that number on the "default" line. Also set the line about updating the default to "true" so it'll automatically increase the "default" line's number when you get a kernel update.

It keeps specifying the wrong hdd on my software raid array, so I have to edit the menu.lst file manually in order to ensure I'll even be able to boot without a livecd.

Perhaps they should have a GUI for setting this to make it less confusing.

I do not have this problem.. Ubuntu detected windows and added it to my grub menu.lst, and ubuntu has never removed windows from my grub menu.lst .

This idea describes a problem introduced by a incorrect manual configuration. It does not happen when /boot/grub/menu.lst is properly configured and it is correctly configured by default, so I set the status to inapplicable.
However, if you have any ideas to improve this and make ubuntu more easy to use with multiboot with Windows XP, feel free to post a new idea about it!
Thanks for your participation in brainstorm.
