Rationale
I have only a 9' display from the eee-pc 901 and I have to use the full display. Now I tried the new KDE 4.2 and there I found the option "Windows can cover (the panel)". This is great because the panel don't hides every time, it is just below the windows.
I mean this additionally. Autohide is not the same. As I explained, the panel in autohide mode is always invisible. By overlapping, it is always normal except maximized windows are above it.
I agree. This is a great idea. I use a side-panel with my sensors, weather and favorite icons. I don't want it to be a normal panel, more of like a desktop sidebar. This should be a feature in a new update of Ubuntu.
Autohide leaves 1 pixel of the panel visible and it prevents windows from taking up the full screen. In Kde I have a small application launcher panel in the top left corner, set to Windows can cover, and I can use Fitts' law to close a window by moving my mouse into the top right corner. In Gnome this isn't possible because the panel takes away that 1 pixel row.
