Idea #17793: Let windows overlap the gnome panel

Written by bassstefan the 1 Feb 09 at 12:40. Related project: Gnome. Status: New
Rationale
I have only a 9' display from the eee-pc 901 and I have to use the full display. Now I tried the new KDE 4.2 and there I found the option "Windows can cover (the panel)". This is great because the panel don't hides every time, it is just below the windows.

Solution #1: Extra option "windows can cover"
Written by bassstefan the 1 Feb 09 at 12:40.
Make an option "windows can cover" in the panel properties. So then the panel is shown as normal on the desktop and windows can overlap. When the mousepointer is on the edge the panel appears. As you can see on the new KDE 4.2.

Solution #2: Extra option "Maximized windows can cover"
Written by briceparent the 6 Feb 09 at 23:50.
It's more or less the same than #1.
Then we also chose if any kind of windows can cover the panel, or only the ones that are maximized.
This way, we can work using the panel, like we do now, and when we want to maximize a window, we may really want to maximize it.
I'm using a msi wind and another computer with a 23" display, and it will be really helpfull for both (eg. when using gimp with high resolution).

Already implemented. Use the autohide feature in the panel.

Solution #4: Different settings for each virtual desktop
Written by tsh the 17 May 09 at 10:44.
sometimes, I want to see the panel, sometimes I don't. The easiest way to control this for me would be using a different desktop for different apps.

Can you not already do this by right-clicking on the panel, selecting properties and then checking the "autohide" box?

I mean this additionally. Autohide is not the same. As I explained, the panel in autohide mode is always invisible. By overlapping, it is always normal except maximized windows are above it.

I agree. This is a great idea. I use a side-panel with my sensors, weather and favorite icons. I don't want it to be a normal panel, more of like a desktop sidebar. This should be a feature in a new update of Ubuntu.

Yes, that's the way it should be. All the old CDE users would like it a lot. Now I prefer KDE just because of this possibility.

Autohide leaves 1 pixel of the panel visible and it prevents windows from taking up the full screen. In Kde I have a small application launcher panel in the top left corner, set to Windows can cover, and I can use Fitts' law to close a window by moving my mouse into the top right corner. In Gnome this isn't possible because the panel takes away that 1 pixel row.
