Idea #1731: Integrate a dock like AWN inside of the desktop

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #237: Functional dock.
Written by milkboy the 29 Feb 08 at 19:27. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
I think it would be great if there was a dock like the Avant Window Navigator integrated inside of the desktop. With that a lot of space will be won and usability will increase.
Why stay stuck with the old fashioned panels?

Ubuntu starts a user out with core functionality. You can add this feature any time you like, but not everyone wants eye candy. Some of us prefer usability over a shiny desktop.

Space will be won?? How so? Space will be stolen! You still need to have one panel...and then AWN, to be usable, has to be at least 40px high (otherwise the icons are too little), but the panels are by default 24px or so, which means they use up much less space.

I prefer to have a top panel (set to the narrowest setting available) and nothing at the bottom. Windows reach the bottom edge of the screen.
