Idea #17266: Kubuntu should integrate a VOIP solution out of the box

bug This entry was marked as not being an idea the 2 September 11. If this is a bug report, please use the Ubuntu bug tracker.
Written by torkiano the 14 Jan 09 at 06:33. Related project: Kubuntu. Status: Not an idea
Rationale
Kubuntu should integrate a VOIP solution out of the box, possibly providing video support, with interoperability with Windows/OSX.

Several QT4/KDE4 solution exist. Ubuntu has Ekiga and Empathy and we need to ship the best equivalent. Softwares existing:

* Kopete: official KDE client but dont has audio/video support for XMPP yet. Decibel support in development.
* KCall: Telephony application of Kontact and based on Decibel framework.
* QuteCom: VoIP/IM solution (SIP, xmpp, msn, yahoo, aim...) with support for audio and video (on SIP conections). QuteCom is the new name for WengoPhone. PPA is avaliable here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~cavedon/+archive

Solution #1: Package Kcall and/or Qutecom
Written by torkiano the 14 Jan 09 at 06:33.
I suggest package and use KCall or QuteCom as a temporary solution until kopete/decibel integration finish.

Package request for KCall: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/252913

Package request for QuteCom: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/241630

Solution #2: Help developing Decibel so Kopete can move forward!
Written by xapient the 20 Jan 09 at 22:28.
As far as i understand decibel will do the conversation with telepathy and kopete will use decibel ... since decibel didn't make it in kde4.2 there won't be any progress in the near future.. kopete is somehow paused till decibel is mature enough to move on.....

Now that I am ditching the Skype boat, absolutely for Solution #2. It's the best solution, even if it will take the longest and require more work.
