Idea #172: A short introduction/welcome guide

Written by Wikzo the 28 Feb 08 at 19:45. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
When a new user boots up the Ubuntu live cd/installed system for the first time, he or she may not be very comfortable with the new look (if he/she comes from a Windows og Mac machine). The person don't know where programs and menus are located, and how the system works in general. Sure, the person can search out the Internet for introduction guides, but what if the system automatically starts up a short easy to read guide about Linux/GNU and Ubuntu?

Such things as why this OS is so great, and how you use it optimality. Where is the word processor located and more common questions, etc.

This is annoying for experienced. That's why I've proposed a tutorial slideshow during installation (Idea #136), as experienced users can walk away while the installation happens, but new users can get oriented better to Ubuntu.

The welcome guide sounds too much like a pop-up... i.e., annoying.

What if is is only a document or PDF file, that are placed on your desktop? Then you can open it (or not) and read a short summary about the system.

aysiu, installation of Ubuntu is so fast on new computers that there is no time for a slideshow. :)

There should be an interactive total guide to Ubuntu for newbies. This is a must. It should be stoppable with one click not to annoy the experienced users, I agree. The user should be able to run it again and again until she is skilled enough to use the PC without problems.

My suggestion is a simple panel notification after the installation is complete that says:

-----------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to Ubuntu 8.04
Go to to learn more about your new system.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Then it points to a resource (a PDF file, or a website, etc) that has a simple list to click and choose:

1. New to Ubuntu? - Click here to learn how to use your new system
2. Learn about the changes from Ubuntu 7.10 (for current and advanced users)
