Idea #1717: Font rendering

bug This idea is a duplicate of Idea #96: Font Rendering.

Rationale
Font rendering, Font Rendering, FONT RENDERING!!!

This is in my view the major, major flaw at this point. I installed Ubuntu 7.10 lately and found it mostly great. Installation, speed, functionallity...

But why, WHY do the fonts look so terrible on my 19" Samsung TFT in comparison to Windows?

I have tried and applied all the fixes and settings available on the forums and the web otherwise, which provided some improvement, but in comparison to Windows, it's just ridiculous.

I cannot fault my girlfriend who flatly refuses to work on that computer, since she has to draft and read for hours, both in word processors and the web.

This is the last major issue to hammer out if Ubuntu is to be an option for the average Windows User and in my view, it deserves first priority!!!

It can be changed you know. Google is your friend.

My Ubuntu fonts look much better than those Windows ones, even with ClearType on. I just had to change some options in "System -> Preferences -> View"...

I think this is duplicated at least once.

I wasn't overly happy with the default font rendering on my laptop, but it was certainly easy enough to change using the Appearance tool.

Ubuntu default fonts look MUCH better then windows ones. For me. So it depends on eyes and monitor

Er...what exactly is wrong? I hear a lot of complaints about the fonts, but if you set it to "best shapes" they look great. Just stay away from that subpixel blurry thing.

hes not asking to change the font rendering to Cleartype, hes saying it would be better to turn subpixel smoothing on by default instead of having to change it manually.

The only thing that keeps me with old winxp. Could not tweak fonts and subpixel rendering to make it look as good as on Windows. Seems like there's both controversy and misunderstandings among users as to subpixel rendering, that needs to be further investigated. In my observation, LCD screens with small grain (unlike 19" @ 1280x900, probably referred in one of the comments) work awesomely with ClearType(tm). When using large-grain screens, many users don't like the way subpixel smoothing works, however, seems like a matter of habbit, esp. when one switches to it from that 'ultra-crisp' (no antialiazing at all) that had been slowly killing his eyes.

AFAIK, besides the cleartype itself, M$ has got fonts specifically designed to look good with it.

It's a pity so few people care about the issue;
