Idea #17114: Guided installations per kind of use

Written by Kathaer the 8 Jan 09 at 08:46. Related project: Live CD installer. Status: New
Rationale
The idea is simple.

While installing Ubuntu for the first time, we could have the possibility to choose a configuration system:

i mean:

"AUDIO"
With just audio programs installed, no graphics, no openoffice or a part of it.... etc.

"MULTIMEDIA"
all we need to edit audio and video and nothing more

"DESIGN"
Inkscape and gimp, and all other useful programs...

"MEDIA CENTER"
All we need to transform our pc in a media workstation

"OFFICE"
Selfexplaining

"COMPLETE INSTALLATION"
All the software included in the repository

"STANDARD INSTALLATION"
The normal ubuntu installation as we ever knew it.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #17114
Written by Kathaer the 8 Jan 09 at 08:46.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #17114 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

the "COMPLETE INSTALLATION" isn't a good idea, since no-one need so much software.

but, that's interesting.

Well, installing the entire repos would be an extremely bad idea. I don't know exactly how large it is, but last I heard it's estimated that debian's repos contain 20,000 packages, 30,000 in the unstable branch. For an idea of just how SLIGHTLY bad this would be, try navigating your menus with ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-desktop both installed.

And anyway, this would be incredibly wasteful. People aren't going to agree on what a 'specialized' version should include, and a lot of those programs are already installed anyway. There's already Ubuntu Studio, and ubuntu has tools which make it very very easy to make your own distribution, with the software and settings you like.

If someone is installing Ubuntu for their office, what good would shipping OO3 do them, if their workplace uses Abiword? Specialized tasks should have specialized distributions; see Edubuntu. Things such as offices should make their own distro if they're going to be using enough computers that it would be useful to have a special install anyway. That way they can ship with their office's selected programs, settings, configurations, and so on.

Audio / Multimedia: try http://ubuntustudio.org/
Media center: try http://www.mythbuntu.org/

As far as the complete installation goes, I'm on Ssdg's side.

somewhere i heard that too much OS flavors makes new users confused!

Where did i heard that? Hmm... ...from Microsoft!

Yeah, I'd prefer not to see so many different variations too. It would lead to new user confusion. This is like the Vista Home, Vista Ultimate, Vista Kitchen Sink, Vista Business, Vista Null, Vista Server, etc. etc. etc.
