Idea #1692: Better Multi-Screen Support

Written by miketech the 29 Feb 08 at 19:01. Category: Graphics. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Ubuntu/GNOME needs better support for multi screens:

- Configuration of different wallpapers per screen (Today only one wallpaper can be configured and it is stretched over the complete screen)
- Windows should open on the screen where the application has been started (Today windows appear on the last position)
- The screen where to display the panels (menu/taskbar etc.) should be configured. (Today the panels are displayed on the external device, e.g. TV or Beamer)

For professional use an easy plug and play for beamers on the vga output of notebooks is needed. Today first I have to start xrandr to configure the beamer. Maybe a configuration of xorg.conf (virtual size) is needed. Then the panels are displayed on the beamer, not on my notebook display.

Normally when plugging the beamer in, it should simply work with the notebook shortcut. Maybe an application should pop up to configure the resolution of the screens. Notebook and beamer should display the same content with the same resolution first. This should be the default configuration. In professional business it is important to keep presentations without any troubles.

actualy both screens should have a panel with the window list. applications that are open on the screen without the window list, do not appear on the panel of the screen that does have them. When a second screen is enabled, either both screens must have a panel with their windows list or one panel which has all the windows listed. Great improvement because now I cannot see all the applications that are open on my second screen. I'd have to start alt-tabbing.

Adding the ability to change what screen a window is being displayed on would be handy. Currently i have to close and reopen the application.

One suggestion:
A User should make a note where a certain programm should be displayed. One could e.g. place pidgin always on the left side, openoffice on right.

Someone has an idea how to manage with the viewports?
Maybe each monitor could have his own viewports.
