Idea #1689: Allow tagging of files using ext3's extended attributes

Written by cr4a the 29 Feb 08 at 19:00. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
ext3 allows you to add extended attributes to any file. Why not let us use this for tags in Nautilus? We could be warned that moving the file between systems would destroy the tags, or be given an option of saving them to a file to be imported back later. Then we could search our system by tag and have something very close to a database file system.

Solution #1: Auto-generated solution of idea #1689
Written by cr4a the 29 Feb 08 at 19:00.
Ubuntu Brainstorm was updated in January 2009. Since the idea #1689 was submitted before this update, its rationale and solution are not separated. Please vote accordingly, and if you have the necessary rights, please separate the rationale from the solution. Thanks!

Solution #2: Nautilus Tags
Written by kwahab the 6 May 09 at 09:22.
Nautilus should support file tagging. Just as I can tag my pictures in a picture manager (digikam, fspot etc.), I should be able to tag my files and later do searches, sorts, filtering based on those tags.
Emblems should be special kinds of tags that show up on the file icons (just as they do now).

Right now there's solutions like Tracker that allow tagging of files without being filesystem dependent (I think).

Actually, newest Nautilus does allow just that?

Systems like Tracker's or F-Spots are no good because they can't be accessed by other programs. We need a system-wide tagging system that is not reliant on a specific program or a specific filesystem.

Ugh. The duplicate system on here is broken. The master idea should be Idea #9560: Tag Filesystem.
