Rationale
The Update Manger works really well but I think the GUI could do with a redesign. I think its fair to say the vast majority of users see an update is available and just hit install.
However once the update has started downloading, I often find my self wondering about the details of what I have just started installing. Especially if I see they are security updates as I wonder if my system has been exposed to the vulnerability.
What would be really good is if the update descriptions were available once the install has started. This would mean making the download dialogue non modal or possibly integrating it in to the main Update Manager window.
I agree. However, I wonder how much most non-geek users really care about what updates they are downloading. I would think that most users just want their system updated automatically. Most people just want a system that "simply works" and do not want to be bothered about details. Maybe there should be an option to make the update process automatic and as transparent as possible too?
Yes! When I use aptitude to upgrade I usually just accept it all, and then scroll up to read the list of packages being upgraded while the process is going on. This is something I would like to see in the GUI.
One of the features of Gnu/Linux is it's resource-friendliness.
If this idea is considered, I hope it's in the form of an option, as anything that adds to system resource use is counter-intuitive.
Maybe a plug-in instead?
