Idea #16418: Replace the bootsplash with Ubuntu Usplash Smooth

Written by Seph_VII the 11 Dec 08 at 13:28. Category: Look and Feel. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
I'll just quote the original creator:

"This is the original Ubuntu Usplash for Intrepid Ibex with an exciting twist!

Now the progress bar is time-based!

What does it means?
Well...

The original Ubuntu Usplash progress bar didn't tell you much information.
It moves in small/huge increments, and sometimes stands still for a few seconds.

This Ubuntu Usplash Smooth does it different!

It remembers the time of your previous boot/shutdown, and will smoothly increase the bar according to this time. Since the boot/shutdown times change very little, you will get a very precise bar with a very smooth animation showing exactly how much time is left!

Check it for yourself!

Modesty aside(!), this is how the usplash progress bar should have been done from the beginning!

Easily packaged in a DEB file, you just have to install it, and boot your computer a couple times. The first boot/shutdown will be quite off the mark, of course, since the Usplash Ubuntu Smooth still don't know how much time it will take to complete. But from the second boot/shutdown onwards, you will simply fall in love!"

This is much like http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/15741. I guess what is new here is that UUS exists so we are not asking anyone to write new software.

Perhaps the first step should be request that this be added to Universe (I think this is usually done by a bug report, although you could also join REVU).

Ideally, it would be a hybrid by remembering the time between each increment, then smoothly increasing the bar between increments at each step. That way, it would look smooth AND give you an accurate idea of where it is in the boot process, not just an estimate based on the elapsed time.

I'm with cdenley.
Sometimes the boot doesn't work, so you want to know where it hangs. Then it would be good knowing at which point it stops booting.

Seems like Plymouth will be a Usplash killer.
It got kernel mode-setting homeboy, that means it will be sweet!
You think a time-based progress bar will be smooth?
Plymouth will be smooth like a babies butt!

Whether or not the bar is time based really doesn't matter to me. Either way, the bar is showing me approximately how far along the system is to being completely loaded. I think the vast majority of users could care less whether its estimating seconds or counting the number of files left to load.

Agreeing with Eldmannen. Plymouth is a much nicer framework than Usplash - I think we should migrate.

A smooth progress bar in 1680x1050 would be nice...

I'm Looking foward of a port of it to Plymouth.
