Idea #163: Sytem-wide shortcut configuration

Written by thorwil the 28 Feb 08 at 19:23. Category: System. Related project: Nothing/Others. Status: New
Rationale
Have a means to configure shortcuts for all installed applications in one place.

This way conflicts become obvious and can be fixed or avoided easily. Identical and similar actions can be assigned the same shortcut across apps. It becomes feasible to change shortcuts for common commands like Save or Print.

There could be sets of shortcuts adapted for use by right or left handed people, people who can't use some fingers or an entire hand.

Perhaps you could use galternatives package?
It's a Debian way to resolve this problem and most programs are already there...

Sometimes it would be handy to put in a certain terminal command to be run when a certain key or list of key's has been pressed.

For example: If I needed to run various terminal commands like: eject -t, eject cdrom1, eject -t cdrom1, etc.. how would it be accomplished?

I propose that in >System >Preferences >Keyboard Shortcuts

in the GUI interface an option to put in custom terminal commands to be run when certain key combinations have been pressed.

A related problem:
Compiz makes certain shortcuts unusable, like the keyboard shortcut that switches between panels.

I vote for the integration of Compiz's shortcuts in such a shortcut key configuration interface. The shortcut to switch between panels is missing for me too.
