Foster the development of a visual (WYSIWYG) open source web editor for Linux

Ubuntu and Linux users need a user friendly WYSIWYG web editor that is updated and maintained. As far as I know, there are simply no open source replacements for Dreamweaver, Frontpage or similar software. What we need is a simple yet flexible web editor.

Kompozer and NVU seem defunct and haven't been updated in ages.
Seamonkey is too basic and doesn't handle CSS.
Bluefish, Quanta Plus and others are very good, but they are not WYSIWYG.
Joomla or Drupal are also very good, but these CMS are highly theme-dependent and not suited for all projects.

If you think this software already exists, please let me know!

WYSIWYG is bad ;-). don't be afraid of html, css or javascript. by looking at the code you can only get better, and it's even faster when you're writing your own CLEAN html.

but that's just MHO.

WYSIWYG is really cheap :p

I think work should go into Bluefish though, it's a great editor...it just has some usability quirks and such... D:

We all know that Linux is already pretty good for experienced coders and tech geeks. The next step for Ubuntu is to reach out to the masses. And I am sorry to say, but my mom will never write her web page with Bluefish.

Look at the most popular Web design software on Windows. Which ones are not WYSIWYG? Then wonder why people are afraid of Linux.

@carpex

maybe your mom should write html using open office, joomla, or wordpress.

and this is the first i hear that masses are designing web pages, most people using windows barely know how to send an email. ubuntu satisfies 99% needs of simple users or "the masses".

anyway, most good web developers write code :-)
